Here's Everything You Need To Know About Hair Transplant
Hair transplant, which was once looked upon as a
‘celebrity thing’ only for the rich and the famous, has now become a household
name. All thanks to the advancement in technology and the growing self
realization by the people to look good, hair transplant is now well within the
reach of the common man. An unhealthy diet and a stressful routine often
resurfaces itself in the form of baldness, bald patches and thin hair.
Fortunately, your head can still get back its glory. If you are looking for hair transplant,
this article will help you understand the basics of hair transplant.
What is hair transplant?
The term
‘transplant’ basically means to pluck from one place and plant the same to
another, just like you were to uproot a tree and plant it safely in some other
place. In case of hair transplant, It is a cosmetic procedure which involves
removing of hair follicles from the back or side of your head and grafting them
on the hairless portion. The part from where the hair is obtained is referred
to as the ‘donor site’ and the part which needs hair is referred to as the
‘recipient site’.
Who needs a hair transplant?
You don’t
have to wait to become completely bald for having a hair transplant. Any
person, man or woman, may have a particular area on their head which is not
growing hair, such as the crown or the part just above the forehead or even a
patch(alopecia). If you have sparse, thinning hair with less density or a
receding hairline, that too is a good time to opt for a hair transplant. As a
matter of fact, hair transplant can even be applied to other predominantly
hairy areas such as the eyebrows, moustache and beards, if required.
Is it Painful?
Pre-procedural
pain: Before starting the procedure, your surgeon sterilizes the area where the
hair will be removed and numbs it with a local anesthetic. You can also request
an intravenous injection of a sleep-inducing drug if you don’t want to stay
awake throughout the procedure. So the only pain you would experience before
and during the procedure is that of the injection. This injection has a very
small needle, which just about passes through the skin, creating only a mild
prickly sensation.
Post
procedural pain: Once the transplant is done, you will be kept on a course of
painkillers which would stop the pain from happening. However, right after the
procedure, there could be a burning sensation on the area where the transplant
has occurred, which will recede in a few hours. Discomfort would be more in the
FUT procedure as it involves stitches which result in swelling and pain on the
operated area. Comparatively, the FUE procedure is much more comfortable and
preferable.
Types of hair transplant procedures
FUT: Follicular unit transplantation is the technique in which strips of
hair are removed from the back or sides of the head (donor area). The patient
needs to be anesthetized during this procedure. Once extracted, these strips
are cut into individual follicular units. Tiny holes are made into the
recipient area where these units are then carefully grafted.
FUE: Follicular unit extraction is a modern technique in which each follicular
unit is individually pulled out from the scalp without removing the strip of
tissue. Hair follicles are extracted in a random manner from the donor area
using an extraction instrument. The extraction from the donor area is hence
hardly noticeable. These follicles are then transplanted into the recipient
area using a micro needle.
Are there any side effects?
There are
no permanent side effects. The only ones that you would have are the ones which
generally come with any operation. The common side effects could be as below
1. Swelling: A mild and mostly
painless swelling will occur post the surgery due to the pits dug in your
scalp. The swelling will reduce within a week with the right medications.
2. Pimples: You will observe
tiny pimples populating the donor and recipient area. These pimples are
actually a positive indication of hair growing beneath them.
3. Shock Loss: You may start
loosing existing hairs nearby the transplanted area post the operation. This is
temporary and the hair will soon grow back.
Costing
The costing
of Hair transplant in Pune totally depends on the number of
grafts. The cost per graft approximately ranges from Rs 36 to Rs 95. Thus,
depending on your requirement, expectations and the area of your head, the
costing will vary from INR 50,000 to 2,50,000/- . But these figures are
completely subjective and it’s best to consult the doctor once to ascertain the
actual value.
Aesthetics
Now that you have understood the fundamentals of
hair transplant, you should also comprehend that all the above techniques have
to implemented by a skillful surgeon. Just like a barber possessing all the
tools in the world can’t help you get the look you desire, unless he himself
has the skill to use those tools to make you look good. Likewise, hair transplant
is a skillful task of grafting the hair intricately on your scalp to mimic the
natural look. This important stage requires experienced hands who can weave the
perfect look.
